Terminology for stainless steel

May 23, 2023

Bright annealing

Same as annealing, but with the aim of preventing discoloration, it can maintain a bright surface of the stainless steel plate.

Brittle deformation

Stainless steel plates have little or no plastic deformation.

Skin needling

Tiny thorns on the edges of ribbon stainless steel produced by cutting operations such as cutting, trimming, shearing, or blanking.

Casting

Molten metal is formed by pouring into a mold to produce ingots or continuously cast stainless steel slabs.

Surface hardening

Hardening ferroalloys makes the outer (shell) harder than the inner (core). This can be carried out by carburizing, cyaniding, nitriding, carbonitriding, induction quenching, and flame hardening.

Cathodic corrosion

Corrosion caused by the reaction of amphoteric metals with electrolytic alkaline products.

Cathode inhibitor

Chemical substances that prevent or slow down cathodic or reduction reactions.

Cathodic protection

Reduce metal corrosion by making specific surfaces the cathode of electrochemical batteries.

Centerless grinding

The stainless steel surface is ground without the use of a lathe.

Chemical analysis

Report on the chemical composition of elements and their percentage of stainless steel products.

Chloride stress corrosion cracking

Cracks caused by the combination of tensile stress and corrosion in the presence of water and chloride.

Chromium

Alloy elements added to stainless steel plates can effectively prevent corrosion.

Cladding

By pouring, welding, or coating on the surface of stainless steel plates, the coating is applied to low alloy steel with the aim of improving corrosion resistance at a lower cost than specialized steel.

Cold rolled rod

For hot-rolled stainless steel bars, annealing and cold processing are carried out to produce higher surface quality and strength.

Cold forming (cold working)

Any mechanical operation that produces permanent deformation (such as bending, rolling, stretching, etc.) at room temperature can increase the hardness and strength of stainless
