Terminology in the stainless steel industry

Jul 10, 2023

Thermoforming

Hot forming operations are widely used in the manufacturing of stainless steel plates to take advantage of their low deformation resistance. The high temperature reduces their yield strength, which leads to a significant reduction in the force required to cause plastic to move or flow from one shape to another. (Hot rolled, hot stretched, etc.)

Hydrogen embrittlement

The absorption of hydrogen by metals leads to a loss of ductility.

Hydrogen induced cracking

Internal cracks caused by connecting adjacent hydrogen bubbles on different planes of a metal or metal surface.

Impact test

Impact testing is used to measure the toughness of materials and the energy required to cause fracture under impact loads. Low toughness is usually associated with brittle shear fracture and high toughness with ductile plastic tearing.

Stainless steel ingot

Pour semi-finished stainless steel into the mold and cure it. Then remove the mold and prepare the stainless steel for rolling or forging.

Intergranular corrosion

Corrosion cracking occurs at the boundaries of metal grains or along their edges.

Intergranular stress corrosion cracking

Stress corrosion cracking will cause cracks along the grain boundary.

Low carbon stainless steel

Stainless steel containing less than 0.03% carbon.

Martensite stainless steel

Martensite stainless steel is a kind of small magnetic stainless steel, which usually contains 12% chromium, medium carbon and very low nickel.

Mechanical properties (physical properties)

Properties determined through mechanical tests, such as yield strength, ductility, ultimate tensile strength, hardness, bending strength, impact strength, etc.

Rolling mill products

Plate, strip, plate, bar, and semi-finished products in the usual rolling form.

Molybdenum (Mo)

An alloying element that can improve the corrosion resistance of chromium in stainless steel.

Nickel

Mainly used as an alloying element in stainless steel to enhance ductility and corrosion resistance.

Nickel based ultrasound

Heat resistant alloys are high-performance alloy metals produced for high-temperature applications, such as nickel iron chromium alloys and nickel chromium iron alloys.

Non ferrous metals

A metal or alloy that does not contain iron.
